Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 3

Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts [4 points]
For this activity, please watch this cool book trailer. Year 7 and Year 8 students in South Auckland, New Zealand helped to make it. Once you have watched the video, use your imagination and create your very own beast. What does your beast look, smell, feel, and sound like?
On your blog, post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.
My beast is a dragon-headed lion. My beast has a body of a vicious dragon and my beast has a head of a furious lion. My beast smells like it just ripped a zebra in half. My beast feels like a pillow because of its mane. My beast sounds like twenty lions roaring. My beast is the most dangerous beast in this world. It's as fast as a speedy cheetah and stronger than 10 vicious bears. My beast can also fly faster than the speed of two quick cheetahs combined.

Activity 2: The Secretive Skink [4 points]
Would you like to be a DOC ranger and live with the animals on Great Barrier Island?
On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.
PROS
1. You are protecting animals
2. The animals will become friends with you and like you more
3. You will become a live saver
CONS
1. The animals might get lost and you will get fired.
2. The animals might get killed by another animal.
3. The animals might attack you.
I would like to become a DOC ranger because I want to protect animals. I also want to become a DOC ranger because I love animals and some of them need help and that's why I want to help them.
Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund [10 points]
Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and, using full sentences, tell us:
1) The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.
2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.
3) What, if any, success they have had protecting the animal.
1) The name of the animal that WWF is working to save the Saimaa Ringed Seal.
2) WWF is building snow banks to help the animal.
3) The successful thing that would happen to the Saimaa Ringed Seal is their pups would have protection from the predators and the cold and human disturbances.

  3. Hi Christopher,

What an incredible animal and a scary one too! All those combinations would make it frightening to encounter.
    Also, great use of similes!
You have become a creative writer and I look forward to reading more.

  4. Kia ora Christopher,

My name is Susie and I am a member of the Summer Learning Journey (SLJ) team this year. Wow, you have really powered through the programme! I am super impressed to see how you've come to the end of SLJ with commitment and perseverance. Did you have lots of fun blogging with us this summer?

I think your beast is a powerful creature since it took all the strengths from some of the most fierce animals around the world. Does your beast have a name? If you do enjoy art by any chance, it would be pretty cool to share your drawing of the beast on your blog as well! It is just a thought :)

I would have to agree with you that becoming a DOC ranger involves a lot of risk because you never know what could happen in the wild. It would also be quite sad to leave your friends and family behind to travel to animal reserves (the islands). There are always different options to take part in saving animals as you would have found out by watching the WWF video clips. Did you get a chance to watch the video about saving tigers as well? It almost feels like watching a short film - you should definitely check it out!

Keep up the good work and I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer holidays before school starts. Ka pai Christopher.

    All the best,
    Susie

  6. Hi Christopher,
Great work completing this activity! I like how you are concerned for the DOC rangers and their jobs, but I'm sure that they have a lot of specialist equipment like trackers that will make sure that they don't lose their animals. I agree with what you said about the animals as well, some species near extinction need help from humans to make sure they stay alive. What kinds of animals would you like to work with as a DOC ranger?
